Dear Dr. -,
I am applying to your master’s program in education for the spring of 2016. After earning my undergraduate degree in Cinematography and Communications from Stephen F. Austin State University, I worked for fourteen years as a Communications teacher at Allen High School in Allen, Texas. I have been teaching for 15 years. I am currently the Communications Department Chair for our student award-winning programs that I support. This includes commercial photography, audio-video broadcast production, animation, journalism, and our new radio station I have started for the students (www.kqks.org). I am a well seasoned teacher.
After college, I remember working in outside sales. I found found sales to be helpful to others and very rewarding. Walking into an educational client’s school room, I felt that there was opportunity. This was a room filled with color, text, art, technology, and inspiration. The teacher was not proficient with any of the technology. I felt there was a way I can help.
After some deliberation, I enrolled in the region 10 educational certification program and left my job. I hunted a special education job down in Red Oak while living in Plano. The principal interviewed me. He noted I would have to commute one and one half hours each way. I was still offered a position, accepted, and loved every minute. I was awarded teacher of the month that first year. During this time, I also developed and taught new night courses for Collin College for their continuing education program. They filled consistently. After teaching at Red Oak, I would drive for nearly two hours home where I would eat a quick bite and drive to Collin, teaching 3 hour night classes. I was exhausting myself. Exhaustion never felt better.
My passion to develop new and innovative programs, pioneering blended learning techniques, and making international connections has made a huge impact on my students, fellow teachers, and staff.
I chose to apply to the UNT College of Education to pursue a master’s of education degree in curriculum and instruction to continue my lifelong learning. My passion for helping others and making connections with the students through project based, hands-on lessons supports my teacher goals. Incorporating technology to make the learner experience an innovative learning environment is important.
I have so many stories of my students over the years. One year, I arranged to have our ELL program bring students to my studio as we practiced newscasts. Their learning was meaningful. Their confidence rose. I recruited a student named Gester from Chili. She grew to become a main anchor for our daily newscast for the school. We broadcast to over six thousand people every day. Truly amazing. Inspirational. I see the world as an opportunity for us all to grow and learn.
I also believe highly in multicultural learning and appreciation. I was an Adobe Education Leader for ten years. I partnered up with fellow master teachers from around the globe and shared learning experiences at our summit meetings at the Adobe Corporate Headquarters in San Jose, CA. I developed the Global Video Battle (http://globalvideobattle.com)with my friend Matthijs Clasner from The Netherlands and involved many countries and their students to interact from across the seas. I have also pursued the most highly respected industry professionals to give back to the students. I tracked down Garret Brown, the inventor of Steadicam and cinematographer from over 100 films (Indiana Jones, The Shining, etc.) to guest judge our High School Video Competition and provide feedback. (www.atpi.org)
My goals are to further my abilities with the learner environment and curriculum. Creation is at the heart of teaching effectively. My goals include expanding my planning for the learner environment, blended learning techniques, implementation of ideas, and generating effective ways of providing reflective thoughts and feedback. I will pursuing even more leadership roles in education. I plan on providing staff training based on my past experiences along with the new ones I will attain from your master’s program.
Thank you for your consideration. It would be fantastic to partner and grow with your highly respected program and meet my educational goals.
Sincerely,
Dusty Parrish
